Project Overview

Angel Square reinvents a prominent corner site in Islington, north London. Transformed by Tishman Speyer, Angel Square is a new HQ workspace that works harder for our planet and people – at the gateway to one of London’s favourite neighbourhoods and minutes from Kings Cross St Pancras.

Designed by AHMM with interior design by @MichaelisBoyd, Angel square targets BREEAM outstanding. Sustainability and wellbeing were key design points which is reflected in the choice of interior finishes.

Flooring & Finish

Elesco supplied over 1000m2 of prime oak flooring in both plank, 925 x 185mm chevron and feature staircase. Products were supplied FSC® 100% certified and finished with our ‘FR’ fire resistant treatment to achieve Bfl-S1 to British Standard EN13501-1.

Feature staircase

The feature staircase at Angel Square was conceived as both a primary circulation route and a central architectural statement within the building’s internal atrium.

Comprised of 190 individual treads and risers each step incorporates a solid oak nosing for visual contrast.

A critical requirement was achieving the minimum 30-point Light Reflectance Value (LRV) for accessibility compliance. We carried out LRV testing for all finishes to ensure the contrast between the nosing and adjacent surfaces was DDA compliant and provided the relevant certification.

The internal void meant that all components were supplied with finished edges, this included 22 apex curves for the half landings which were manufactured to mm precision using our in house CNC.

The Result

The interior of Angel Square delivers a considered, architect-led spatial experience.

The feature staircase with 190 treads and solid oak nosing’s forms a sculptural centerpiece, its fully finished edges and 22 curved apex borders providing a high level finish which is both visually striking and elegant to observe.

All flooring and staircase components were manufactured with our ‘FR’ finish, ensuring compliance to EN 13501-1 with the highest achievable rating, Bfl - S1.

A bespoke oversized chevron in the café creates energy and rhythm, while our long length plank in hallways and workspaces provide warmth, continuity, and legible circulation.

Together, these materials and gestures define a cohesive, refined, and welcoming interior environment.
